About the Artist
Spetzler Designs is a one-person kinetic wood art studio based in Eugene, Oregon, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Gary makes hand-cranked wooden automata, runs workshops and classes, and had recently begun to create bespoke commission pieces.
More than 20 hand-cranked automata — each one exploring a different emotional state or quality of a life lived fully. A small wooden figure — hand-cranked, entirely wooden, full of feeling — is working its way through the full emotional range of a human life.
It is warm. It changes over time. It carries the memory of where it grew. An object in wood is never quite finished—it is always becoming something. Just like the person who owns it.
Inspired Creations
From the Bench
One-off kinetic pieces outside the series: Coffin Coin Bank, Bird Automaton, Halloween kit automata (bat/ghost/spider), Wooden Clock. All with real images and videos. One line noting occasional CNC collaboration with other local makers.
I am beginning to take a very small number of deeply personal commissions — kinetic sculptures in wood, powered by gravity, shaped by a deep conversation about who you are. I am honest about where this practice is starting.
